Evaluation

1.In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
'Tehzeeb-e-Henna', my documentary on the art of henna, adheres to the conventions of a fully narrated and mixed style documentary that we opted for. Drawing our inspiration from the research we conducted into fully narrated documentaries, we highlighted some basic conventions such as a relevant background score, narration, logo, name, statistics, interviews, subtitles, starting credits and different camera shots and angles.Using these conventions to convey the subject matter, the exploration of the unique art, we aimed to follow the conventions to create a typical cultural documentary. However, in making the documentary extract, my partner and I tried to challenge or develop the typical conventions. Developing along the typical conventional documentary codes, we incorporated interviews, real footage using pan and wide shots and narration in the background to take the viewer on a journey through the Shaheedi Bazaar with us.In developing along the conventions,we chose a very typically cultural name that speaks of the subject matter itself. It fades in on the background of the thaals challenging the conventional way of the name appearing boldly on a plain background. The logo at the right bottom of each frame is an example of how we tried to challenge the conventions where the logo appears only at the beginning and end. Believing the logo to be the mark of our originality and creativity we incorporated it throughout the video. Using a range of camera angles and shots i.e. point of view shot, wide angle, tracking etc., we have tried to achieve the desired effect for the viewer of traveling through the bazaars and not only watching it on television. Thus 'Tehzeeb-e-Henna' uses as well as challenges the conventions of documentaries.

Deciding The Documentary Type

Opting for MIXED and FULLY NARRATED style of documentary, we have used the concepts conventional to these genres. Adding a multitude of actual shots and footage, interviews of people important to the topic of the documentary and narration in the background to give the audience insight into the documentary topic, a range of techniques shall be used to produce an extract of a documentary.
